1895 PHYTOLINE A POWERFUL ANTI-FAT Quack Medicine Bottle Brown Wide Tooled Lip
As a weight-loss drug for the obese, it certainly would be interesting to see the journals of those taking this. It included Arsenic, Strychnine, Caffeine, and Poke Berries. Made by Professor W.W.Baxter of St.Louis,Mo. A resinoid preparation that was advertised in the Ladies Home Journal. The carnage from this product is not fully known, but likely one of the many reasons for the rise of the FDA in 1906.
This is a bottle from an estate collection that had been in storage from 1966-2017. The original collection was over 4000 bottles. The family that built this collection was deeply into historical preservation and conservation. They did their own digging, which included collecting all the of the paper travel memorabilia as they traveled across the American West looking for these old bottles (and insulators, and rocks – but we didn’t get those collections). In some cases, we have items that were prepared for going to shows, and then we have boxes and boxes of bottles that are “freshly dug”.
