Description
1937 JUN 29 FDC CACHE CONFEDERATE STATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY Sandston VA Lee’s Army (Magruder and Huger) attacked the rearguard and wounded left by McClellan while withdrawing to the James River. The action was indecisive. This is from a rare collection of First Day Cover Caches that attempted to mail a commemoration of the Civil War from the city where the event happened 75 years earlier. The stamp used on each of these were various 3-cent stamps that do not match the event. So, while not technically a first day cover of the stamp, this appears to be the only release of this series of commemorative caches. In researching these, I could find no example at all of these whatsoever on the Internet. They may, in fact, be one-of-a-kind items. They were stored in a larger collection of First Day Covers collected by my Mom over a period of at least 70 years. The cache appears to be hand-stamped, and in some cases there is ink bleed-through on the other side of the envelope.
