Description
1937 MAY 15 FDC CACHE CONFEDERATE STATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY Drewry’s Bluff VA “The Monitor’s Last Fight”Cancellation is from the USS Roper which was the first ship to sink a German U-Boat in WW2.This is from a rare collection of First Day Cover Caches that attempted to mail a commemoration of the Civil War from the city where the event happened 75 years earlier. The stamp used on each of these were various 3-cent stamps that do not match the event. So, while not technically a first day cover of the stamp, this appears to be the only release of this series of commemorative caches. In researching these, I could find no example at all of these whatsoever on the Internet. They may, in fact, be one-of-a-kind items. They were stored in a larger collection of First Day Covers collected by my Mom over a period of at least 70 years. The cache appears to be hand-stamped, and in some cases there is ink bleed-through on the other side of the envelope.
